Illikkal Kallu - Kottayam
Illikkal Kallu, situated on the magnificent Illikkal Mala, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Kottayam district. Located at an altitude of 3,500 feet above sea level, the Illikkal Mala has numerous hill streams that flow down to form the tranquil Meenachil River. Each of the three hills has a unique shape. One of them resembles an umbrella, hence the name ‘Kuda Kallu’ (umbrella rock). The second hill has a small hump on its side, earning it the name ‘Koonu Kallu’ (hunchback rock). The third hill is called Illikkal Kallu, named after the hill itself. The hilltop has a steep rock face that forms part of its summit.
The nearest town is Nellappara, 8 km away, and the nearest major town is Erattupetta, 19 km away. The journey to the hilltop is eventful, with hairpin curves that make for a thrilling drive and trek. After the drive and trek, a path leads you to Illikkal Kallu. You can either walk along this path or experience the power of this muscular rock.
The surroundings of Illikkal Kallu, wrapped in misty clouds, and its breathtaking view of the sky will surely captivate you. The climate is cool and misty. On clear days, you can see the Arabian Sea as a thin blue line on the distant horizon. The sunset on full moon days is special here. To reach Illikkal Kallu, take a bus from Kottayam to Erattupetta. From Erattupetta, take another bus to Mankombu. From Mankombu, it’s a 3-kilometer trek to the top of the hill. Alternatively, you can drive a private vehicle or rent one up to Pazhukkakanam and then take a jeep from there to Illikkal Kallu.
